The Natural Sciences and engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has approved funding for a joint project between STS pain Pharmacy (Specialized Therapeutic Solutions) represented by Alain Vincent, Pharmacist, University of Victoria and the department of chemistry at the University of Victoria represented by Dr.Dennis Hore.
The objective of this grant is to detect the presence of fentanyl in drug substances by using low-cost near infrared device.
This research can potentially lead to the creation of a simple device (possibly smartphone based) with a plain YES-NO result that could be operated in Harm reduction institutions; or, at national level, during inspection by customs officials at port entry . The implications could be enormous in terms of future applications.
